Friday Five: Halloween Costumes

So Halloween is just a week away and it’s time to start seriously considering costume options. I have a couple floating around, both of which I won’t be sharing, but since I’m going to be at a bar for Halloween my costume must be fairly convenient and not at all annoying. I tend to shed most of my costume by hour one. For example, the year I was Wednesday Addams my braids were gone within 15 minutes. So, I’m a bit disappointed I can’t steal one of Grace’s cheap costume ideas, bummer.

All of these 5 costumes are fairly simple to put together, somewhat work appropriate (if you are into that sort of thing), and translate well to my plans for Halloween eve. Just, for the love of God, don’t go in a hazmat suit or anything related to Ebola. Have a little taste.

1. Suzy Bishop from Moonrise Kingdom

Suzy is one of my favorite movie characters and last Halloween I sure did see a bunch of them. That said, I did take this idea from Oh Happy Day’s Hipster Halloween costumes for kids but it translates so well to adult costumes as well. Besides…hipster kid costumes are adorable.

2. Ice cream cone

This is such a cute DIY costume from Studio DIY and definitely work appropriate.

3. Box puns

I love puns. I love box puns. Cheap costumes with a box? Even better. See all the ideas here: Cheap Costume Ideas by Grace Helbig

4. Cher Horowitz

Screen Shot 2014-10-24 at 10.24.25 AM

True story: When I was in 4th grade I used to strictly dress like Cher Horowitz. No, not around Halloween. You could even say that’s fairly inappropriate for a 9 year old. That said I could very easily bring that back into style with help from Where does one find a cell phone like that after all these years…

5. Alex Mack

This one might be a little more obscure unless you were a fully coherent child of the 90s capable of spending hours watching Nickelodeon. Yes, Alex Mack is quite simply the best, most simple, and dare I say comfortable costume of the whole bunch. Thanks for the inspo, College Fashion

Friday Favorites: Pinterest

Well, Friday is almost gone, and I almost missed Friday Favorites. Not that it matters entirely, but better (almost) late than never, right? This week, rather then spending hours blissfully doing some virtual window shopping, I decided to head back to my trusty friend, Pinterest, and see what was happening there. Loads of beautiful vacation spots, new street styles, and plenty of recipes. Not to mention a few photos of some pretty cute musically talented boys, but no one wants to hear about that.

There’s not much more to say than that, so here’s some of my favorite things currently appearing in my Pinterest feed that are worth the repin!

This Week’s Favorite Things

Ah, it’s almost Friday. It’s so close I can almost taste it. I am so, so excited for a mini holiday. I just want to catch up on loads of shitty television and make a little change with my hair. But, I’m a bit of a workaholic so I’m sure I’ll still be working like a busy little bee.

For now, enjoy some of my favorite things from this week.

Word Up! by Little Mix. Sure it’s a cheese-tastic video, but there’s a Sporty Spice cameo and it’s raising money for Sports Relief. It’s pretty much my driving jam of choice right now. If you live pretty much anywhere except the US you can pre-order the single on iTunes. It’s for a good cause so get moving.

Favorite Things: February 6

First of all, congratulations. We made it to Thursday. I don’t actually know why I’m celebrating that. All Thursday brings is one day closer to a far too short weekend. I’ve had some, what I’m calling, “in limbo” time this week. So here’s some of my favorite images from Tumblr and Pinterest.

Words to Live By 004

I haven’t written about movies in a long while. I’m just not very good at it either so it’s really no loss. But movies are still one of my favorite things, I recently watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and here we are. I loved it. The trailer left me feeling lukewarm about it. Mainly because I literally couldn’t tell anyone anything about it that would convince them to spend their hard earned money on it. So, I went it alone and I must say it exceeded my expectations.

The visuals are absolutely stunning. I never knew Iceland was that beautiful. Then again I’ve never given Iceland that much thought to begin with. Ben Stiller did a hell of a job with both directing and acting in my humble opinion. Sure there are moments, like with any other movie, where things just aren’t that great, but those moments are outweighed with better ones. But how does this lead to Words to Live By? Well, the quote above said by Sean Penn’s character to Walter.

For some reason those words stuck with me while watching the movie. As cheesy as can be said, every time the sun sets a radiant pink or the mountains look close enough to touch on a nearly crystal clear day it commands a sort of beauty. A beauty that exists nearly every day, but goes relatively unappreciated.  I may be missing the mark entirely as far as the quote is concerned, but it meant something entirely different to me and will mean something else for another person. If there’s one thing I took from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty it was inspiration. Not just from the character of Walter or how he just went after life on a whim, but everything all at once.

Long story short: Beautiful things don’t ask for attention, go see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and live life. On that note, I’ll be back later. I’m planning a trip to Iceland.

Oh, and don’t forget the soundtrack is killer which I mentioned just yesterday here.

Interior Envy: Workspaces

For an upcoming issue, Dwell shared the workspaces of some of their favorite design bloggers. These are just some of my favorites. Makes me think it’s time to redesign my desk space instead of using it as a purse/book/recipe/random item dumping ground.

Home Envy

I’m really loving the layout and design of these lofts in Kansas City. Yes, Kansas City! Especially this kitchen. The lofts are sold as shells which buyers then design, with their own contractors and architects, to fit their own personal styles. My favorite part of this concept is each unit becomes a unique living space. There’s no more trying to make due with mass produced fake wood cabinets, or out of date and unattractive fixtures. It really is a blank canvas. Rooms can be as small or as large as the owner wants. There are no rules, and unless someone lacks an imagination, the possibilities are endless. Okay maybe there are things you can’t do like build a moat. That would be just ridiculous.

Spring Garden Party

The weather is getting warmer, the pollen is driving my allergies insane, and of course, I wish I could entertain outside. Soon it will be too warm to even step outside until after 7pm, so I want to spend as much time outside as possible.
